Elected RSA: 10 July 1829

William Bonnar exhibited for the first time as a professional artist in 1824 and was elected a member of the Royal Scottish Academy in 1829. He exhibited at the RSA every year but one until his death in 1853. Initially, Bonnar specialised in rural scenes and images of children but later on he concentrated on painting portraits, many of which were engraved by his sons. His original Diploma Work is listed as missing from the nineteenth century and so we were pleased to be able to purchase his 1830 RSA exhibit The Mask as a replacement in 2021.
