The Society of Eight was a group of Scottish painters who mounted their own annual exhibitions in Edinburgh from 1912 to 1938. Gillies’ membership allowed him to show his most daring modern works. Today, this painting does not shock, but it did in 1934 and critics said its texture and colours were ‘thick, massed and seemingly unrelated and perverse’.
