William Littlejohn Sketchbook, c.1949

This very early sketchbook dates from towards the end of Littlejohn’s time at Dundee College of Art and already shows the beginnings of his later style. Even in the faithful landscape of Crudie on page 14, one can see his approach to dividing the composition and using different techniques to separate elements out from one another.

Human figures rarely feature in Littlejohn’s works, but on page 21 is a study related to one of the earliest paintings in the RSA Littlejohn Bequest, Untitled (Study for Figures on the Beach), which dates from around 1950.
