Born in Edinburgh in 1942, Kirkland Main trained at Edinburgh College of Art between 1960 and 1965. He become the Head of the School of Drawing and Painting from 1991 to 1998 and a Professor at Heriot Watt University in 1998.

His abstract paintings explore man’s engagement with the landscape and how it is shaped through industry, cultivation and design.  Working in a semi-abstract style, Main uses bold colour and thick application of oil paint on canvas.

Since his retirement Main has continued to paint from his studio in Cramond.
