RSA Obituary, transcribed from RSA Annual Report

Kenneth Macleay RSA was born at Oban in 1802. His father was a medical man of some note in his day. Kenneth spent his childhood and youth at Crieff and, going to Edinburgh at the age of eighteen, seems to have at once agonised a good practice as a miniature painter. He rarely painted portraits in Oil, but his miniatures on ivory possess many of the characteristics of oil painting, having great force and richness of colour.

During the last half of his career his portraits were principally in watercolour upon paper, strongly characteristic and beautifully touched.

He died in Edinburgh in November 1876.
