WORKS ON PAPER
Frances Walker is one of Scotland’s foremost female landscape painters and is currently celebrating her 80th birthday with a major retrospective at Aberdeen Art Gallery. She has spent her entire career documenting the landscape and plight of the communities of the Highlands. Her work is a very prominent comment upon what Scotland has already lost in terms of the traditions of the Highlands and Islands since the clearances as well as being a voice for what we could further lose in terms of landscape and environment if the march of development and environmental change happens at its current rate.

Frances has travelled extensively throughout her career with trips to Finland, Iceland and most recently Antarctica (at aged 77) but it is for her investigation of the islands (including the now uninhabited islands) of the west coast of Scotland which she is be best known. It is a selection of these drawings and prints which we are now showing here at the RSA.

There are a couple of new films about Frances’ work which were made specifically for her retrospective exhibition in Aberdeen – currently on show there, and also a very good review of her work by Prof Duncan Macmillan in the Scotsman.
