Continuing with the theme of Highland Culture in 2007, As Others See Us celebrates the long tradition of artist’s portraiture by artists whose work has specific links with the Highlands.
Twelve artists have been invited to participate to create both a self portrait and a portrait of another artist. The artist’s brief was to pair with another artist, either of interest to them or as suggested by the curator, thereby creating both a literal and artistic dialogue between them. There will be at least 24 works from the 6 pairings, but other appropriate pieces relevant to the theme may be added.
There will also be a full colour catalogue available with images, short artist’s bios and statements. As this exhibition required many of the artists to explore outside of their usual working boundaries, the essays reflect on how they responded to this challenge of being both the observer and the observed. The exhibition has been curated by Gordon Brown of Brown’s Gallery, Tain.
The artists participating are:
John Byrne – Steven Campbell
Calum Colvin – John Bellany
Alex Main – David Eustace
Allan Macdonald – Eugenie Vronskaya
Craig Mackay – Pat Semple
Gordon Robin Brown – TBC
