WATERCOLOURS FROM THE PERMANENT COLLECTION OF THE RSA
A Recognised Collection of National Significance

This exhibition features a selection of watercolours from the RSA’s nationally significant collection of Scottish art including topographical pieces, landscapes, still life, figure paintings and portraits. It explores the evolution of the use of the medium of watercolour by Scottish artists from the elaboration of drawings in the late 18th and early 19th centuries towards an increasingly painterly use of the medium and a realisation of its expressive qualities and its potential for abstraction in the 20th century. It is fitting that this exhibition of Scottish watercolours coincides with the launch of a new RSA residency award devoted to watercolour painting in memory of the late William Littlejohn RSA and with the National Galleries of Scotland annual display of watercolours by Turner – an artist who did so much to explore and elevate the status of the medium.
