David Alan Redpath Michie OBE RSA (1928-2015) was born at Saint-Raphaël in the south of France. His father, James Michie, was an architect and painter and his mother was the celebrated artist Anne Redpath OBE RSA.
Michie studied at Edinburgh College of Art under William Gillies and would return to teach at ECA becoming Head of the School of Drawing and Painting in 1982. Elected as an Associate Member in 1964 and a Full Member in 1972, David was an active and knowledgeable Academician who became a father figure to students and fellow artists alike.
Colour was central to David Michie’s painting. Working in both oils and watercolour, his subjects ranged from nature, garden compositions and his observance of people going about their everyday activities. His work was regularly inspired by his travels to far-flung places such as Australia, the USA and across Europe.
In 2016, the RSA received a bequest of over twenty paintings, drawings, studio tools and equipment, photographs and archives belonging to David Michie and his mother Anne Redpath RSA (1895-1965). The bequest also included no fewer than 130 of Michie’s sketchbooks, which span is career as an artist.
