Keith Rand RSA (1956-2013) was born in Germany and trained at Winchester School of Art where he had a studio for making furniture. After moving to Scotland from Winchester, Rand worked as a technician at the Scottish Sculpture Workshop in Lumsden from 1984 to 1987, and was appointed to its board of Directors in 1989. He was a visiting Part-time Lecturer at Glasgow School of Art, Duncan of Jordanstone College of Art, Dundee and Gray’s School of Art, Aberdeen from 1990-94. Elected to the Academy in 1996, Rand became a full member in 2005.

Rand made a unique contribution to contemporary sculptural practice in Scotland. His affinity with and understanding of wood was astounding and he was involved at all stages of the adaptive process, from the living tree to his finished sculptures. The Academy cares for the Keith Rand Studio Gift, which includes sculptures, maquettes, drawings, tools (including a selection hand-made by the artist), archival material, and no less than 130 sketchbooks.
