BOTHY PROJECT, CAIRNGORMS & ISLE OF EIGG
Bothy Project is a unique and independent charitable organisation operating in a set of rural contexts, providing creative residences in bespoke small-scale, off-grid creative residency spaces to explore creativity, landscape and living simply.
We provide creative residences for practitioners in visual arts, craft & design, music, literature and performance, as well as thinkers, researchers, and people local to each bothy. Residents are able to use their residencies to explore creativity, landscape and living simply.
Active in Scotland since 2011, when it was initiated by artist Bobby Niven and architect Iain MacLeod, its network currently comprises Inshriach Bothy in the Cairngorms National Park, Sweeney’s Bothy on the Isle of Eigg.
Inshriach Bothy was built as a part of the 2011 RSA Residencies for Scotland Programme and sits on the banks of the river Spey within a traditional Scottish woodland area of the Cairngorms National Park.
Sweeney’s Bothy is located on the Isle of Eigg, and was created by Bothy Project in collaboration with artist Alec Finlay as part of Creative Scotland’s Year of Natural Scotland 2013.
|Studio Facilities||Bothy Project’s bothies are modern off-grid, live/work spaces designed specifically for artists residencies. They allow creativity and living simply within distinct landscapes in Scotland. They are comfortable and warm, insulated with sheep’s wool and heated using wood-burning stoves. Facilities include a library, desk, mezzanine double bed, kitchenette, stove with oven, gas hob (Sweeney’s only), outdoor shower, composting toilet, and solar powered lighting and electricity system.
These simple live-work spaces strike the balance between the priorities for making-thinking-doing and connecting with the environment local to the bothies. Facilities at the bothies have been designed to support residents’ focus, and diminish the distractions of digitally connected life. As such there is limited power, internet connection and phone signal at the bothies.
|Costs||Partnership Residency Cost is £650 per week (please note this amount has been discounted by 20%)
Cost includes all bedding, cleaning and firewood.
|Minimum Period||1-week minimum stay|
|Maximum Period||By negotiation. The bothies are simple dwellings and we find people enjoy to stay for one or two weeks at a time. Longer residencies can be proposed and discussed, but we would advise splitting a longer residency over a number of visits.|
|Other facilities||The Bothy Project Team can advise about access to the landscape and environment around the bothies, as well as individuals and groups active in each area.|
|Support offered||The RSA Partnership Residency Cost is discounted by 20%
No other financial support is available.
|Promotional support offered||The RSA residency and artist will be promoted through Bothy Project’s website, regular newsletter, and on our social media platform.|
|Exhibition opportunities||There is the possibility for an RSA Resident to participate in Bothy Project’s upcoming public programme of talks, podcasts and posters.|
