| 180th RSA ANNUAL EXHIBITION | |
| The diversity of Academy members who live in different communities throughout Scotland represent a broad cross-section of ages and styles. John Mackechnie, Elizabeth Blackadder DBE, James Morrison, Philip Reeves, Calum Colvin, Frances Walker, Adrian Wiszniewski, and Eddie Summerton are to name but a few Academicians exhibiting. There is also a particularly strong architectural presence this year, with three galleries dedicated to showing work by prominent architectural practices across Scotland. This years invited artists are Eva Merz and David Blyth who both deal with life and culture in the North East of Scotland from the historical to the contemporary. David’s ‘Bridle Suite’ is a series of beautifully adapted gym horses reupholstered in fine silks and brocade which originated from a period of research into the phenomenon known as The Horseman's Word - a secret society of Horsemen and Ploughboys active up until the late 1900's in Scotland. Eva's critical comment on supermarket development in the North East has resulted in three large scale photographic installations SPACE/RETAIL/MAGIC. As part of the project Deveron Arts has published a book containing an interview with Joanna Blythman, author of ‘SHOPPED, The Shocking Power of British Supermarkets’. The interview focuses on a series of issues from politics and planning permissions to independent businesses and trading competition to farmers’ and producers’ problems, food quality and the British shopping culture. For the first time since the Academy's foundation in 1826, changes to the Supplementary Charter introduced in 2005 signify ground breaking changes to the Academy's constitution and Membership body, which include relaxing the limitations between disciplines of Painting, Sculpture and Printmaking making provision for new media, installation, performance and photography.
