| EUAN GRAY: JOURNEY - press release | |
| Euan used his scholarship to travel to the South Sea Islands in the footsteps of Scottish writer Robert Louis Stevenson. He travelled between the islands, studying island life and culture and exploring the idea of the 'exotic'. His journey reflects experiences described by Stevenson and Euan hoped to discover and record visually, the changes that have taken place since Stevenson’s first description. Euan's work deals with themes such as globalisation and its effect upon traditional culture. He intended this epic journey to be a record of this set against Stevenson’s experience and his own, another Scot’s lad setting off to the South Seas in search of adventure, inspiration and life-changing experiences. Euan Gray is a graduate of Edinburgh College of Art and Slade School of Art, London, and is already making a name for himself as a prolific and established young artist showing regularly in exhibitions the length and breadth of the UK. The Alastair Salvesen Art Scholarship is a major initiative intended to encourage and assist young painters who have already made the transition from college to professional practice. This travelling scholarship enables the artist to take a journey of discovery to find new experiences, new challenges and new resource material. Alastair Salvesen, from Pathhead, Midlothian, is one of Scotland’s foremost art benefactors and has offered the travel scholarship to artists since 1989.
