| RSA ANNUAL STUDENT EXHIBITION 2005 - press release | |
| A staple of the academic and exhibitions calendar, it is a much-anticipated event for both students and the public and offers a glimpse of the emerging talent to be showcased at the degree shows later in the year. Last years show was hugely successful with over 6,280 visitors, nearly £20,000 in sales and a record 431,000 hits on our website! The range of work submitted, from the sublime to the controversial, caused heated debates around the world and generated much media attention for the artists. Many of the prize winners subsequently achieved further support through RSA Scholarships, gaining recognition in their first but by no means tentative, year out of college! The RSA Annual Student Exhibition is an exciting opportunity for the public to sample, in one venue, the progress of final year and post-graduate students of painting, sculpture, printmaking and architecture from the four Colleges/Schools of Art and six Schools/Departments of Architecture in Scotland. As well as offering the students an opportunity to showcase their art, it provides for them, an insight into the development of professional practice. There is no selection process - every student may submit work! Over £12,000 worth of cash awards, medals and awards in kind are presented to prize winners selected from this Exhibition. In addition to our longer standing awards, we are excited to announce a further three new prizes this year! They are the Peacock Visual Arts Award for Moving Image: 6 months free access to their digital facility; the Glasgow Print Studio Award: free membership and session fees for a Glasgow-based printmaker and the Edinburgh Sculpture Workshop Award: free membership and one months session fees! Also, the winner of this years Standard Life Investments Property Investment Architecture Award of £500 will travel to Paris and includes one day at the offices of Valode & Pistre Architects. Previous winners at the RSA Students Exhibition have included Elizabeth Blackadder, Sir Robin Philipson and John Bellany to name but a few. To this end, the Exhibition is a rich source of interest for art collectors, gallery owners, art lovers, architects and designers eager to discover the cream of Scotland’s emerging talent. Installation works, oils, prints, interactive pieces, sculpture, performance and architecture all brought together by the RSA for this showcase extravaganza. Most of the works in the Exhibition are for sale so it's an excellent opportunity to pick up a contemporary art bargain! Admission is free.
