PLAYFAIR CONTEMPORARY ART SHOCK

It is true that galleries of the Royal Scottish Academy Building have been beautifully restored. But can I draw your attention to the beautiful set of lower galleries which have already proven to be a successful exhibition space for contemporary art. During summer 2003 The Royal Scottish Academy brought a major exhibition of paperworks by leading US Abstract Expressionist Helen Frankenthaler to Scotland from the Museum of Contemporary Art, Miami. This was the first show of Frankenthaler’s in the UK for some thirty years.

Further to this, the Royal Scottish Academy are working hard to continue presenting new innovative art within the Royal Scottish Academy Building. Beginning during the Festival 2004 and continuing into 2005, the RSA will present new exhibitions by Scottish artists in all media including amongst others, audience participation (Alec Finlay), sound (Scottish/Finnish 50 artist jukebox extravaganza), performance (with SSA) and …yes…. FILM works (by new graduates)! As well as New Architecture, the RSA Student Exhibition and showcase exhibitions for young artists such as Delia Baillie, whose recent exhibition drew 14,600 visitors during its short run.

This series loosely banner-titled ‘PROJECTS’, looks at the differing collaborative ways in which art is made in Scotland today and, we feel, the most exciting, forward-looking development to happen in the Royal Scottish Academy Building to date.
The RSA will present these new shows in Edinburgh and give the opportunity for younger, less established artists from across Scotland to showcase in this superior, world-class exhibition space. Further details can be found about this programme at www.royalscottishacademy.org

So, no need to panic. The RSA will show post-war artwork. We will continue to present and promote new Scottish art. Just maybe not in a way in which we have done in the past.
