Now in its 16th year, the Scholarship will enable Euan to travel to the South Sea Islands, following in the footsteps of Scottish writer Robert Louis Stevenson. Whilst travelling, Euan will make a visual record of his experience and return to Scotland to prepare paintings and drawings for a solo exhibition at the Royal Scottish Academy in 2005.

Euan looks to use his time travelling between the islands studying and absorbing island life and culture. His journey will reflect experiences described by Stevenson and Euan hopes to discover and record visually, the changes that have taken place since Stevenson’s first description.

Euan’s work deals with themes such as globalisation and its effect upon traditional culture and the idea of balance, the duality and fragility of life and traditional ways of life. He intends this epic journey to be a record of this set against Stevenson’s experience and his own, another Scot’s lad setting off to the South Seas in search of adventure, inspiration and life-changing experiences.

Euan Gray is a graduate of Edinburgh College of Art and Slade School of Art, London, Euan and is already making a name for himself as a prolific and established young artist showing regularly in exhibitions the length and breadth of the UK.
The Alastair Salvesen Art Scholarship is presented in association with the Royal Scottish Academy.
