FESTIVAL EXHIBITIONS
Back "home" after a three-year absence, the Royal Scottish Academy is
presenting three exhibitions in galleries 9, 10, 11 and 12 of the RSA Galleries
which have recently undergone major reconstruction work as part of the £27m
National Galleries of Scotland "Playfair Project".
The three exhibitions, open during the Edinburgh International Festival (and
beyond) are:
HELEN FRANKENTHALER - Paintings on Paper (1949-2002) 13th August -26th October This is a retrospective exhibition by renowned American artist Helen
Frankenthaler, an Honorary Member of the RSA) which comes to Edinburgh from the Museum
of Contemporary Art, North Miami, Florida. Frankenthaler is regarded as one
of the trailblazers of modern art with her innovative stain-painting technique
and while she has painted on canvas and paper all her life, in the last ten
years she has worked almost exclusively on paper.
Frankenthaler: Paintings on Paper (1949-2002) was organised by the Museum of
Contemporary Art, North Miami, Florida, USA and was curated by Bonnie
Clearwater. The exhibition has been generously sponsored by the Citigroup Private
Bank. Additional support provided by Gillette, Funding Arts Network, Audrey and
David Mirvish, Paula and Joel Friedland, the Braman Family Foundation and
Nancy and Michael Gifford.
The Edinburgh exhibition is sponsored by the Royal Bank of Scotland and
supported by the Dunard Trust.
NEW ASSOCIATES- 13th August - 19th October
A group exhibition of new works by some of the recently elected Associate
Members of the Royal Scottish Academy - Joe Fan (painter), Gareth Fisher
(sculptor), Malcolm Fraser (architect), John A.Mackechnie (printmaker), Alison Watt
(painter).
THE RSA AND ITS HERITAGE - 13th August - 26th October
The return to the RSA's 'home" gallery provides a fascinating opportunity to
look back over 178 years of the Academy's 'homes', particularly its history on
The Mound, Edinburgh.
The Exhibitions will be held in galleries 9, 10, 11 and 12 (south door
entrance). Open 13 -29 Aug. Mon. Tues, Wed, Sun. 10am-6pm, Thurs. Fri. Sat. 10am -
8pm, from 30th Aug. - 19th Oct. daily (except Thurs.) 10am-6pm, Thurs. 10am -
8pm. Admission prices £5 (£3 conc.) children under 12 free (for RSA
