In 2004, seven New Associates were elected to join the Royal Scottish Academy.
Ranging in age and diversity of media the 'magnificent seven' were asked to contribute to this exhibition, welcoming them into the Academy and introducing them to the public as Associates of the RSA.
Having been given the daunting (and thrilling) task of bringing the artists together in one show, I set about securing rooms for the exhibition and making contact with the exhibitors to visit their studios, see what they were up to of late, and select work.
I can't easily relate just how interesting and exciting it was to be welcomed into their creative spaces. The areas in which ideas take shape, early stages are pondered over and great works of art are produced. Intimate spaces where masterpieces are nurtured and belong, before being transported across the globe to galleries, collections and homes. Often never to return.
In the lucky position that I find myself, I have been privileged to have spent time with these artists, discussing over cups of tea and coffee, working process, hopes and aspirations for new work and their love of the creative drive which pushes them forward to continue making.
It is also the other small anecdotes and experiences which give me so much pleasure in viewing this exhibition. Looking at Sandy's magnificent art collection; being driven from a cold and wet Leuchars station by Marian discussing everything from house cats to deer/land management; chatting about new architecture with Jo whilst looking at the city scape of Glasgow from her East Campbell Street studio; talking Edinburgh/Glasgow politics with Michael (which we figure doesn't matter to us North east lads!); Gordon describing to me the concept of Freobel's gift blocks; John referring to the images of his children as ' the wee ones' with such affection; and trying out eye-popping stereoscopic glasses with Calum, are just a few of the memories which jump to mind and make me think of this selection with great fondness.
I'm sure that visitors to the show will find their own pleasures here.
