ARTIST GUIDED WALK & DISCUSSION

with Stuart MacAdam

ARTIST GUIDED WALK 1.40pm – Innocent Railway Line, Duddingston Road West.
PANEL DISCUSSION 4pm – RSA Building, The Mound

The RSA is pleased to announce that artist Stuart McAdam will be leading an event examining the legacy of the infamous Beeching Cuts, within the broader context of the relationship between art and walking.

A guided walk along the Innocent Railway Path begins at 1.40pm at the entrance to the Path on Duddingston Road West, Edinburgh, followed by a talk at the Royal Scottish Academy at 4pm, where Stuart will be joined by Claudia Zeiske, Director of Deveron Arts, leading a panel discussion on subjects arising from (and related to) the guided walk. The panel will comprise of:

Nina Coulson: co-founder of MOVEMENT gallery, based on platform 2 of Foregate Street Railway Station, Worcester.
Derek Halden: a civil engineer who has been involved in many path infrastructure projects connecting people and places, railway projects connecting places to cities, and community station projects which connect paths to railways.
Ellie Harrison: an artist and coordinator of the Bring Back British Rail campaign, the ‘collective voice of disgruntled rail passengers and disheartened train employees, demanding a re-unified national rail network run for people not profit’.
David Spaven: a campaigner and transport consultant for Scottish and UK transport agencies – having worked as a British Rail freight manager for 18 years until 1993. Together with Julian Holland, he wrote ‘Mapping the Railways’ on the history of Britain’s railways, now on its seventh impression after selling more than 50,000 copies.

For more information on the panel members, please download the document prepared Deveron Arts Walking Institute available from the foot of this webpage.

Stuart McAdam’s practice is research-led, describing his working methods as involving himself “in actions and processes in order to understand and form frames of reference for production.” He was selected for the first RSA New Contemporaries in 2009 and earlier this year started his residency position at Deveron Arts in Huntly, where he began his research for this latest project.

This event is part of the Edinburgh Art Festival.
