Between 1840 and 1932 the Academy operated a Life School and at its foundation was the teaching of figurative and anatomical drawing, and drawing from live models.  Students were also encouraged to study old master’s paintings and sculpture and make copies, thereby learning through practice.  Many of Scotland’s famous artists passed through its doors as students and the collections contain outstanding figurative paintings by Samuel John Peploe, Robert Brough, George Ogilvy Reid and James Lawton Wingate, amongst many others.

In celebration of our roots we will be running a weekly Life School in Gallery 1 featuring a live model and some of Scotland’s best emerging artists in life drawing.  Led by the RSA’s own expert in anatomy George Donald RSA; with guest tutors John Byrne RSA, Jennifer McRae RSA and Robert Rivers. Visitors will have a chance to view the artists and tutors in action every Thursday during the exhibition, 10.30-12 and 1-2.30 (except Thurs 28th Sept).
